Junior Branch

Lewis Hayward has been Headmaster of UCS Junior Branch since September 2014.

An Oxford Classicist (in addition to his PGCE and MA in Education Management) with a former life including spells away from teaching in Saudi Arabia and Kenya, he has previously taught at Holmewood House (Kent) and Highfield School (Hampshire) as well as a five-year spell as Deputy Principal at Highgate School.

Married with two children – Francesca, a principal at the Royal Ballet, and Adam – when time permits Lewis enjoys writing fiction and reading as well as keeping fit by cycling or running into school every day from South London.

Matt Miles grew up in Birmingham. He attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, receiving the Eugene Cruft Prize for Double Bass, before embarking on a successful performing and recording career as a jazz double bassist.

After completing an MSc in Music Information Technology, he started a new career in primary education, eventually working in senior leadership roles in a number of schools across North London with a focus on school improvement.

He took up the role of Deputy Head (Academic) at UCS JB in September 2021.

Dominic Edwards has over 20 years’ teaching experience in various educational settings.

Born in Pittsburgh and educated in America, Ireland, Wales and England, he thrives on being part of a community or team that works together positively and still participates in team sports. He fits this around his son’s and daughter’s sporting needs and long dog walks.

Ensuring pupils have a safe environment to learn and develop is his top priority and he works closely with pupils and staff to enable this to happen. Delivering a weekly assembly, being there for a friendly chat during tuck and running extra-curricular activities are opportunities for Dominic to communicate and build trust with the boys. He is involved with Games coaching for physical health and teaches Wellbeing in the classroom to explore mental health.

After finishing her BSc in Economics at Queen Mary, University of London, Pooja began her career in insurance and finance, working as an underwriter for Lloyd’s of London, before completing her PGCE at the UCL Institute of Education.

She has been teaching for over 13 years in schools such as Westminster Cathedral Choir School, St Christopher’s School and, most recently, St Anthony’s School for Boys. As a Mathematics Specialist, Pooja has taught in Key Stages 2 and 3 and has extensive experience in preparing boys for the 11+ and 13+ exams.

She joined UCS Junior Branch in September 2021 as Assistant Head and is responsible for the 7+ admissions process.
