UCS Netball Takes on Old Gowers in Inaugural Clash

The inaugural UCS Old Gower Netball Tournament saw four teams compete at a superbly high level for the first time on Saturday 7 September. The tournament was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on pupils and Old Gowers alike.

The event brought together women ranging from new Transitus pupils who had joined UCS only a few days earlier, to veterans who captained UCS in previous years, to mothers of boys currently at the school. Despite the diverse combinations of players, who in some cases had never played together before, the level of fitness, strength, and skill on show was extraordinary.

All teams played each other in the final round seeing UCS 1sts player OG 1sts, and UCS 2nds matched up with OG 2nds. Both matches were close, but neither closer than on court 1. Going into additional time it all came down to a nail-biting final three minutes with scores neck-to-neck at 9-9 with the OGs securing a narrow victory in the final seconds.

A devastating injury removed UCS captain and standout player Georgia (also named Player of the Tournament by England Netballer and UCS guest George Fisher!). After a nail-biting three minutes of extra time, the OG 1st came away with the win in what was a hugely exciting tournament – the UCS girls will be hoping to take the shield back next year when we meet again in what will become an annual fixture.

The triumph was particularly significant for the OG ladies, who have worked tirelessly to establish their club. However, the true highlight was the sense of community and excitement shared by all involved. One of the standout performers was Dani Elias, a UCS OG player who has recently been selected for the England U18 netball squad. This achievement is a testament to her talent and hard work, and it serves as an inspiration to the promising young players in the current UCS team.
