Old Gowers reunite over dinner at Frognal

On 23rd February the Annual Old Gowers’ Dinner was held in the UCS Refectory. It was a tremendous success, attended by more than 130 Old Gowers; with OGs who left the school in the 2020s mingling with those who had been at UCS in the 50s, 60s and 70s. As the Old Gowers reminisced about their school days, the evening was filled with warmth and laughter.

A highlight of the evening was a speech by OG Baron Finkelstein, who gave fascinating insights into politics and Premier League football, and made comparisons between the two. There was also the opportunity to thank Adrian Paterson, outgoing President of the Old Gowers’ Association, for his years of loyal service. Adrian has handed over the presidency to Mark Alden (OG, 1980–89).

The Annual Dinner – back at Frognal after a covid hiatus of three years – is a central part of UCS’s ongoing aim to keep Old Gowers engaged with the school where so many spent happy years. The chance to share stories, swap anecdotes and hear about the Foundation’s current plans was warmly appreciated by all who attended this time.

“Visiting the school is like travelling in a time machine which never fails to arouse pulchritudinous memories,” said Philippe Bobroff (OG, 1965–70), while Ian Barr (OG Former Staff, 1991–2016) added: “I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was great catching up with former students and staff. It was a splendid occasion and great to see it back in the calendar after a few years out.”

As the night came to a close, Old Gowers bid each other farewell, promising to keep in touch and meet again at the next year’s dinner. The event was a testament to the strong bond that OGs share with each other and with the school that helped to shape their futures. It was truly a night to remember.
