Mastermind moves, Chess team give stellar performance at nationals

The school’s chess team recently made their mark at the regional finals, having come a close second behind Highgate School, securing their place in the national final competition.

George Clarkson and Peter Hazel, members of the chess team were standout players, winning 3 out of 4 games in the intense competition. The team’s success can be attributed to their continuous training sessions held on Friday lunchtimes and Tuesday after school, where they honed their skills and tactics.

The national finals, held at Birmingham Edward VI Grammar School on 22 April, showcased the team’s talent and determination. Arjun Bharadwaj – Remove, told us “It was a really exciting experience, all of us played good chess and we are really happy with the results”

As the day progressed, in an electrifying turn of events, Peter Hazel, a year 7 student, found himself in a tight spot during the third match. With time running out, Peter displayed remarkable skill and strategic thinking to turn the game around, leaving spectators and competitors alike in awe. “we lost the 2nd round, but as a team, we had a strong mentality and came back with 4th place out of 18, which is very good!” said Roman Kavalskyi – Transitus.

Overall, the school’s chess team has proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with, their stellar performance in the regional finals and their relentless determination in the national finals stand as a testament to their hard work and dedication. The entire school community is elated and proud of George, Peter, and the entire team for their remarkable achievements
