A Champion Among Us: Helder Silva’s Visit to the Junior Branch
Not so long ago, the Junior Branch was abuzz with excitement as pupils enjoyed an unforgettable visit from Helder Silva, an amputee footballer whose story is as inspiring as his skills on the pitch. Helder, a key player in England’s historic 2023 Nations League victory, shared his incredible journey of turning passion into a remarkable career.
During a captivating assembly, Helder recounted his experience of losing his left leg to cancer at age 12. Far from dimming his love for football, this challenge fuelled his determination. He now plays for the England National Amputee Football team, demonstrating the power of resilience and the limitless potential of the human spirit. He took time to elaborate on the specific rules of this version of the game: except for the goalkeeper, everybody on the field plays using crutches. Our boys were fascinated!
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly break time. The boys were thrilled to have the opportunity to play football alongside a national champion. Helder joined them on the pitch, generously sharing tips, demonstrating skills, and radiating an infectious enthusiasm for the game. Meanwhile, the staff stood by and watched as the air was alive with the crackling sounds of laughter and cheers playing together, a moment not to be forgotten.
Helder’s visit was more than just a fun afternoon; it was a lesson in perseverance, determination, and the power of positive thinking. He showed our pupils that challenges can be overcome and dreams can be achieved with passion and hard work.
