Double UCS success in Royal Society of Arts Design Awards

In the lead-up to the Art and Design & Technology Departments’ joint summer exhibition, two UCS A Level students have been announced as winners of a prestigious Royal Society of Arts Design Awards challenge.

All Year 12 Design & Technology students at UCS had to complete an exciting five-week project set by the RSA as part of their A Level course. The pupils provided professionally written responses to thought-provoking briefs, and Frognal duo Calum and Ruby were surprised and delighted to learn that they had won their age category. This national challenge, tailored to different age groups to encourage participation from students across the UK, aimed to expand knowledge of social design and its practical applications.

Ruby designed a multifunctional ergonomic heating and cooling pad – named ‘The Comfort Flow Pad’ – that targeted crucial and painful areas of the body during menstruation. Calum’s project ‘Community Haven’ offered a unique solution to bringing the community together while also advocating for environmental sustainability.

The evaluation criteria spanned a wide variety of skills, and the UCS Year 12 cohort achieved remarkable success overall, in addition to Ruby and Calum winning their challenge with these highly commended projects.

Ruby and Calum will now attend an awards ceremony and workshop day hosted by the RSA, with the opportunity to showcase their work alongside other talented individuals and take part in a range of workshops and lectures.
