UCS gets Green Flag with Distinction

Green Impact Society, UCS Senior School’s indefatigable eco club, has sealed another successful year of sustainability campaigning by picking up another ecological award, the Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction.

An internationally recognised accreditation, the Green Flag with Distinction rewards a year-long process in which UCS Senior School pupils have completed and evidenced seven detailed steps including writing an environmental review and action plan. Groups that achieve 100/100 marks are awarded the Green Flag, whereas our Senior School pupils superseded the criteria to secure a further 84 points and gain the Green Flag with Distinction.

“This is a huge achievement for all pupils, staff and parents involved and is a reflection of everyone’s continued hard work in school and in the local community,” said Ms Johnson, Green Impact’s coordinator. “Well done and thank you to all who have enabled us to achieve this recognition.”

The accolade caps a remarkably productive year on the sustainability front. In March, UCS officially became the first UK school to win gold recognition in every step of the UN Climate Neutral Now Initiative – confirming UCS as having taken all necessary steps to become carbon neutral.

Already a signatory of the UN Climate Neutral Now Pledge and latterly of Camden Council’s Schools Climate Charter, the Foundation also earned One Carbon World’s Carbon Neutral International Standard for a second straight year, followed by a Queen’s Green Canopy award after pupils planted more than 300 hedging trees in their biodiversity efforts.

The Eco-Schools programme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), one of the world’s largest environmental education organisations.
