Google trip rewards UCS clean air crew

This evening, UCS pupils from across the year groups visited Google HQ for the culmination of the Community Air Pollution Sensors (CAPS) project run by PPL PWR and Camden Clean Air.

It was a brilliant opportunity for our young people – representatives of both Green Impact Society and Coding Club – to see how the air pollution monitors they had built fit into the wider context and discuss how Camden Council can achieve its target of bringing air quality within WHO safe levels by 2030.

The monitors built by the CAPS team can be more precisely defined as portable toxic airborne particle sensors. At Google HQ, the UCS contingent met leaders of Camden Clean Air and members of Camden Council as well as partnering companies and another school involved in the CAPS initiative.

The discussions ranged from individual or small-scale strategies for making a difference to Camden to large-scale changes for certain industries to consider. The UCS group spoke about different ways of making travel both more efficient and more green. For example, pupils living in the same area could carpool, and reward systems could be put in place for big numbers of students all taking trains. The pupils also talked about potential research into materials used to make electric cars.
